Project Spotlight ยท Thornton, CO

Thornton is full of newer homes, and most of them come with the same starting point: a builder’s slab, a fence, and a backyard of dirt. That’s a blank canvas. Here are three recent projects our crew completed in Thornton: a stamped concrete patio with synthetic turf and tiered block walls, a low-water backyard with turf and rock, and a round fire pit on a curved concrete patio.

1. Stamped Patio, Synthetic Turf & Tiered Walls

This backyard sloped up toward the back fence. We built two tiers of block retaining walls with steps between them to level it out, then poured a stamped concrete patio off the back of the house with a charcoal border. A rectangle of synthetic turf sits between the patio and the walls, and the rest of the yard is finished in gray rock so there’s nothing to mow or water.

2. Low-Water Backyard: Turf & Rock

The homeowners wanted green grass for the kids without the water bill. We installed a long rectangle of synthetic turf in the middle of the yard, framed it with rock landscaping and a few shrubs, and poured concrete walkways to connect the patio, the side gate and the turf.

3. Round Fire Pit on a Curved Concrete Patio

This new home had a covered patio under the deck and nothing beyond it. We extended the concrete out into the yard with a large curved patio and built a round stone fire pit in the center. Along the side, block retaining walls hold back the grade, with red rock borders around the edges.

Built for Thornton Yards

Thornton’s clay soil, wind and freeze-thaw winters are hard on outdoor projects that aren’t built right. On every job we plan for that:

  • A compacted base and proper control joints so stamped and plain concrete don’t crack or settle.
  • Retaining walls built on a solid base to level sloped new-build lots.
  • Drainage that moves water away from the house, with rock borders, grading and slope on every hard surface.
  • Low-water options like synthetic turf and rock that stay clean and green with little upkeep.
