Westminster has everything from 1950s brick ranches with big mature trees to newer two-story homes on sloped lots backing onto open space. Most of the projects we do here are about making the backyard usable: more patio, better access, and less lawn to fight with. Here are five recent projects our crew completed in Westminster: a wood pergola over a concrete patio, a raised modern patio with a block retaining wall, a curved concrete patio, concrete steps on a sloped side yard, and a couple of smaller concrete jobs.

1. Wood Pergola over a Concrete Patio
This backyard had a detached garage and not much else. We poured a concrete patio along the side of the garage and built a freestanding wood pergola over it, anchored on steel post bases. String lights run under the rafters for evenings. The rest of the yard got a low-maintenance gravel finish with large concrete stepping pads leading to the patio, plus a separate concrete pad near the house for the grill.

2. Raised Modern Patio with Block Retaining Wall
The backyard behind this brick ranch sloped away from the house. We built a block retaining wall with a smooth cap to create a level, raised patio, then filled it with large concrete slabs set in black rock for a clean, modern look. Wide block steps lead down to a planting bed and the lawn. Along the side of the house, we carried the same style through with concrete stepping pads in black rock leading to a new wood gate.

3. Curved Concrete Patio
This home backs onto open space with mountain views, but the backyard only had a small slab off the walkout. We poured a large concrete patio that wraps the back of the house and finishes in two curved ends, so there’s room for a dining set and a separate lounge area without losing the lawn.

4. Concrete Steps on a Sloped Side Yard
The side yard on this home climbed steeply from the front to the back. We built a run of wide concrete steps up the slope, with block retaining walls stepping up beside the house and river rock on both sides to handle runoff. Getting from the front yard to the back is now a comfortable walk instead of a scramble.

5. Concrete Driveway, Walkway & Back Patio
Not every job is a full backyard. These two smaller projects show the kind of everyday concrete work we do across Westminster: a new driveway and front walkway for a brick ranch, with flagstone stepping stones through the mulch bed, and a back patio with two wide steps down to a rounded landing.

Built for Westminster Yards
Westminster’s clay soil, sloped lots and freeze-thaw winters are hard on outdoor projects that aren’t built right. On every job we plan for that:
- A compacted base and proper control joints so concrete patios, steps and driveways don’t crack or settle.
- Retaining walls built on a solid base to turn sloped yards into level, usable space.
- Drainage that moves water away from the house, with rock borders, grading and slope on every hard surface.
- Low-maintenance finishes like gravel, black rock and concrete pads that don’t need mowing or watering.
