Centennial homeowners want backyards they can actually live in: a place to cook, sit by the fire, and let the kids play without a lawn that needs constant watering. Here are three recent projects our crew completed in Centennial: a composite deck with a stone fire pit and grill island, a wood pergola over a concrete patio, and a new-build backyard with synthetic turf and a block retaining wall.

1. Composite Deck with Fire Pit & Grill Island
This backyard went from plain grass to a full outdoor living space. We built a low, wide composite deck that runs from the back of the house to the garage, then added a round stone fire pit in the middle of it and a stone grill island against the house. Built-in step lights along the deck edge, path lights in the lawn and string lights overhead make it usable long after sunset.
To finish the yard we laid fresh sod, set large stepping stones from the deck out across the lawn, and added a raised wood planter box beside the garage.

2. Wood Pergola over a Concrete Patio
This walkout basement had a concrete pad under the upper deck, but the sun made the rest of the backyard hard to enjoy. We extended the patio out into the yard with a curved concrete edge and built a wood pergola over it, connected to the deck above. The slatted roof breaks up the afternoon sun, string lights hang underneath, and there’s room for a ring of chairs around a fire bowl.
Synthetic turf wraps around the patio, and a concrete walkway and rock beds tie it back to the side of the house.

3. New-Build Backyard: Synthetic Turf & Retaining Wall
This new home sat below a slope at the back of the lot. We built a block retaining wall with a smooth cap to hold back the hill and create a level yard, then installed synthetic turf across the lawn so it stays green without watering or mowing. Wide concrete steps and a patio come off the back of the house, concrete stepping pads cross the turf, and rock borders handle drainage along the wall and the house.

Built for Centennial Yards
Centennial’s clay soil, strong sun and freeze-thaw winters are hard on outdoor projects that aren’t built right. On every job we plan for that:
- Solid footings and a compacted base under decks, patios and walls so nothing settles or heaves.
- Drainage that moves water away from the house, with rock borders, grading and slope on every hard surface.
- Shade and lighting so the space works on hot afternoons and after dark.
- Low-water options like synthetic turf and rock beds that cut down on watering and mowing.
